Specimen Preparation

Prior to the fabric testing procedure, several specimens should be prepared. It is recommended to use the specimen preparation kit (specimen stencil, cutting mat and rotary knife) for specimen cutting.

It is necessary to cut following specimens of 2.5x20 cm size:

  • For shear measurement, one rectangular specimen should be cut in a bias direction.

  • For stretch/bending measurement, 10 rectangular specimens should be cut; 5 in warp and 5 in weft direction respectively.

  • One of these specimens is used for thickness testing.

  •  All ten specimens cut in warp and weft direction are used for the non-destructive stiffness test.

  • After this test, one specimen for each direction (warp, weft and bias) are used for the stretch test.

Important:The order of testing is important, since the stretch test is destructive, therefore, a specimen cannot be used after the test for secondary testing or for any other test.

  • Cut specimens from different areas across the fabric roll to achieve a better representation of fabric properties. Do not cut specimens too close to selvedge.

For the weight measurement, a single circular specimen should be cut using the GSM Cutter. The GSM Cutter allows you to cut a specimen of 100cm2 area.

Using the layout shown below, the fabric piece of 35 x 35 cm is enough to cut all specimens necessary for the testing.
